Planet in Danger Poster Painting Competition – Results

We had a brilliant response with over 90 entries. It has been very heartening to see how much thought went in to these posters They are now all on display in the Children’s and Adults’ Libraries so pop in and have a look at what Kingston’s children have been working on.

Congratulations to Phoebe Goldsmith who wins the tickets for the London Wetland Trust Centre, and to Andrew Boardman who wins £50 vouchers for the Rainforest Café, Piccadilly.

We also have 10 certificates for our other favourite posters. It was a huge task choosing the winners as they were all so different and engaging. There is something for everyone, so do visit the link to see some of the entries. A big thank you to everyone who made this such a success.

A couple of weeks back I set up a display of free walking and cycling maps which are disappearing fast. It’s amazing how many good quality free resources there are available at your library! There is so much to explore. If you are interested in the biodiversity of Kingston Borough then call into the Biodiversity Open Day on Saturday 30 October and you will find lots of local experts and enthusiasts to tell you about local walks, plants, birds, mammals and insects etc. And of course we have lots of related books for you to browse and borrow.

Do you have a bird feeder or bird bath in your garden?

Though they are a wonderful way to attract birds into your garden, it seems they may be transmitting a disease which is seriously damaging finch populations, particularly green finches and chaffinches. We are advised to wash baths and feeders once a week. It’s certainly true that chaffinches are no longer the common garden bird they used to be. A pity – they are so wonderfully curious……and if you do NOT have either of them, then how about borrowing Jen Green’s “How to Make 40 Beautiful Bird Boxes, Feeders and Birdbaths”?? It’s beautifully illustrated and you only need the most basic DIY tools.

We are receiving lots of new books on biodiversity themes, and getting them ready for display, so pop in and have a look. I have my eye on The Natural History Museum’s Fragile Web – what next for nature? myself, so if I’ve beaten you to it, just let me know and I’ll return it early!

If anyone has a hankering to keep bees, then we have a great selection of books to get you started. (I’ve just read somewhere that 2010 is a great year for honey. I don’t really understand how, when we hear so much about colony collapse, and rapidly declining bee populations. Anyone any ideas??

I am hoping to arrange for some beekeepers to come along to our Biodiversity Open Day on Saturday 30 October….sadly it clashes with the National Honey Show at Weybridge, so many in the beekeeping fraternity are booked up. Are there any friendly beekeepers out there available to come and chat to us?

I’m busy setting up a Biodiversity News display in the Library too, so please submit any suggestions to me via the blog (with sources). So far I have included a fascinating item on bees being cleverer in the morning than in the afternoon. (Yes, I am bee mad). Also the results of the latest survey on stag beetle distribution in UK.

One last thing…not many entries for the 13-18 years section of the poster painting competition so far, so if you’d like to win £50 of Rainforest Café vouchers, just get your entries in to me by 14 September. Details on the competition page.

Kingston Library Has Caught The Biodiversity Bug

To celebrate the International Year of Biodiversity we are launching a season of talks, displays, competitions, quizzes and activities. Things are taking shape so keep an eye on this blog, the Kingston Libraries website, and in the branch to find out what is happening –In October we have a speaker from Kew Gardens talking about biodiversity, we have local conservation group talks and displays, with themes including gardening and wildlife, beekeeping, sustainability, recycling, and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Games, quizzes, word searches, prizes and fun for all the family.

Coming up right now we have a Planet in Danger Poster Painting competition for 8-18 year olds, so get planning now and you could win a Family Ticket for the London Wetland Centre or a cool £50 of vouchers for the Rainforest Café in Piccadilly.
